Default Seattle at night

Hi,

I live in Seattle and I just got a digital Canon Rebel XT for x-mas. Tonight I wanted to post up with a tri pod (and maybe a bottle) and take shots at night of the city I live in, Seattle.

I am just starting so can someone give me a few tips on how to capture a nice night time, cityscape photo. Shutter speed, ISO, ect...

THANKS!

I like this article for night cityscape photos: Cityscape Night Photography

You basically have 2 options for how to approach night shots. The first is high ISO, shorter exposure times, the second is low ISO, longer exposure times. If you have a tripod, I find that the second option is better because the noise you get from the long exposure isn't as much as with a high ISO.

I prefer exposures that start around 30 seconds, ISO 200, and apertures of around f/8-11. And if you don't have a remote, then use your camera's self-timer. Those are all just starting point of course, and it will depend on the amount of lights and ambient light where you are Oh, and manual mode of course so that I can make all the decisions.

Nicole,
Ive been reading and it still hasn't come across to me. For a long exposure (since I don't have a shutter control cable or remote) do I need to physically hold down the shutter manually?
