Yes, every book I've read says this.
I, however, have found that rules can be broken if you're creative (and willing to lie down in the dirt- literally- to get a shot) This was taken at 3:30 p.m.

While the general rule is sound, the colors at dawn and sunset are more vivid, long shadows can also destroy a great shot. During my first visit to Spider Rock, I awaited sunset to take my shots then hated every one of them because of the distinct shadow lines on the pillars. My next trip, I went during midday so as to alleviate any shadow problems. Of course, on my next trip, I plan to shoot Spider Rock from the base!
