Default Metering Question

Ok I think I get the Metering for setting up a shot but on landscapes do you meter for the correct exposure and note the setting then apply the ND grad or fit the filter then meter I know this sounds really stupid but I am just trying to sort this in my head before spending loads on filters then c***ing up shots with them ... I am getting six filters 3 ND Grad's and 3 solid ND filters but wondered if it is a case of metering first etc etc I know I usually WAy overexpose on my first shot .... also is it best in landscapes to use matrix metering or spot or the one in between ?

Well the ND graduation filters you would use spot metering and meter the Sky and the landscape your taking and then count the stops between them for example if you go up two increments on the shutter speed from landscape to sky that is one whole stop and that would be mean using a 1 stop ND graduation filter applied to the lens.

Then exposing for the landscape take the picture thats the basic rule hope that helps for now.
