Default How will I shoot sun dogs?

Hi all, I'm hoping for some help in advance. As the weather here gets colder, I am anticipating seeing sun dogs - rainbows to the sides of the sun. Sometimes these are so bright it almost looks like three suns in the sky. I would love to get a photo of this but have no idea how to go about it.

I have a Canon Rebel XTi, the standard 18-55 mm zoom lens, and a 55-250 zoom lens. I have a neutral density filter. I have a tripod. I would be willing to purchase other filters if that is what I need.

I'm a fairly new photographer, so if you have suggestions please bear with me as I try to figure it out. I'm thinking about this in advance as I have no way to predict when this phenomenon will appear (except that it will be very cold). It may not happen until January or so.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sounds like a great project I think the problem you may have is with dynamic range, a bright sun and rainbows and then the sky and possibly a landscape will be very hard to get it all exposed. And im not to sure the ND ilters would work as the sun and rainbows will be spots of light not all the upper part of the shot.

Try Auto bracketing and merging exposures (HDR), or expose for the the bright sun and leave the sky dark, or the other way round the sky exposed the sun blown out could work out pretty arty. Would love to see the results... Just be careful on your peepers!!

Thank you for the tips, Teaking. I will now go off and learn about autobracketing and merging exposures Over the course of the winter I should have ample opportunities to try a variety of approaches, hopefully one (or more) will work out!

I'll be sure to post when I do this so watch for it!
