Default Hyper-focal focusing

Hi everyone

I'm confused about something here (not for the first time) and hope someone can put it into layman's terms if possible.

Ok, regarding the technique "Hyper-focal focusing" I've been reading a few magazines and websites about this technique, the thing that i just don't get is this, Lets say i use an Aperture of f/11 with a lens Focal point of 18mm according to my chart the Hyper-focal distance would be around 1.4Meters or 4.7 feet, now if I'm shooting a landscape shot if focusing 1.4meters into the scene wouldn't i be focusing on the ground lol! (like pointing the lens 1.4m in front of you) how would you go about focusing 1.4 meters into the image, sorry it's probably laugh out loud easy to understand it's just not sinking in!!! Grrrrr help lol!!

i hope this is in the right section btw!

There is typically a scale on the lens of your camera, with the approximate focal distance, use that to find 1.4 meters.

Simple-Go into camera menu apply AF lock-Focus on your feet(or the ground)-assuming you are over 5 feet tall- by halfway pressure on shutter button-press af/ae lock button on back of camera,(locking focus only)-
Take finger off shutter button-Compose and make your exposure.

regards, Ken

I will make this really simple- Focus 1/3 rd the way into your scene- no graphs, no caclulators no nothing. You do need to have your lens set at f/8 or higher, (f/11, f/16, f/22) . Now you point the camera at the ground - tree what ever @ 1/3 the way out in your scene- push the shutter button 1/2 wqay down- now raise the camera and compose your scene- take the picture. Practice this a few times and use any scene and you will see it works!!!! Can't get any simpler. If the light is good and you can use f11 or higher, you can even focus on a rock or ?? right in front of you, push the shutter button 1/2 way to focus- and then tilt the camera up and shoot, and the rock will be in focus also... some limitations apply so you need to test your lens- the wide angle setting works better than telephoto settings. You get more depth of field, ( front to back of scene clearer) Good luck!!

The theory is that your depth of field will be great enough to extend to infinity, so focus 1.4 meters into the scene and the depth of field will extend well beyond it.
