I live in the city and wander around, but I live in Seattle and everywhere is beautiful so I have a lot to work with.
Also I'm a hiker so I just bring my camera with me on the trails, and a lot of the trails I find via trail books or online forums. Some people even post their pictures taken with point and shoots so I kinda know what the area looks like and what to expect. What city do you live in? |

Maps on flickr is a great way to find things to photograph in a certain area. you can zoom the map to a certain area and filter to show the most interesting photos on that map, you can also filter by search terms.
I would link to an example but Flickr maps is a bit backward and doesn't have the facility to do that. Here is the maps application. Flickr: Explore everyone's photos on a Map |

Like many of the other answers i hike and backpack and go where most people don't. island parks.
something i also do is check every bridge sometimes you can find cute little gems here and there. i pull over on the side of the road as well scout the area. if out of town i ask people where some places are. sometimes even in home you never know. i ask younger kids as they are more active and hiding from parents. but that's best if you know them. |
