Default New 20mm lens

hi i have just been supprised by my wife who brought me a nikon 20mm 1:28 lens(isnt she great) I would like to know a bit about this lens if anybody can help that would be a step in the right direction. i plan on taking some landscape shots latter and would like to know about best apperture to use ,ie a good starting point.also why is their a switch on the lens to lock it to f 22 (i think) thanks for your help .Kym

The switch that locks it to F/22 is for use on any modern SLR or DSLR: the camera bodies control the aperture. If you were to use it on something older (manual focus, usually), you'd have to unlock it and turn the ring to control aperture directly. For use on anything after the 1980s, jsut leave it locked and use it like you would anything else.

The 20mm f.2.8 is quite nice. I've been told to look for a used f/3.5 example instead, as it's sharper and, for IR use (my intention), better.

Thanks for the quick reply it makes perfect sense now.There wasn,t much info that came with the lens.I took some shots with it this afternoon and was pleased with it,s performance a very different lens than my 28-300 which was my only lens until i got this.it opens up a completely new side of photograpy. regards kym.
