Check your exposure compensation. You may have somehow set it to something high, which is messing with your shots.

Thanks for that, the EV is actually set to -0.3 but good idea!

Thats the one - The whole shot above is over exposed, not just the sky. It may not be the EV but for some reason the camera over exposed everything. What was the metering mode and the shooting mode?

As for it being more difficult with a DSLR, its not. Its just you notice more when things go wrong.

This is a dumb question, but how do you change the EV? I have the same problems with overexposure as the thread starter, and this thread has been most helpful.

You know, the last time I brought that up as an answer to a question in another forum that I know for a fact is answered by the manual (I know I had looked up the same question that was asked) the person asking the question got their but on their shoulders and was offended that I had even mentioned that...("I thought this was a helpful forum"...etc..)

They simply wanted someone to tell them all the answers and didnt want to have to actually read a little bit
