I quite like the colors in both, and would have a hard time choosing. A little more water (if these are cropped) would give a more 2/3 sky 1/3 water look. As to your question about HDR in Elements, you are correct -- it does not have the capability to create HDRs. I don't think the photomatix plugin for photoshop will work for it either, but I'm not sure about that. For a free alternative, see my post in the current HDR thread.

Honestly, I also prefer the original one. Although, perhaps some adjustment of contrast and brightness could help out in other cases, but the original is awesome.

I merged your two photos, but I think I still prefer your first one! Hdr is usually better with several photos, but I was curious about the outcome...You'll notice the only difference is that the water is just a bit darker, the rest is nearly the same!

I prefer the one, as I prefer the colours. The clouds look great - I suggest if you are interested in HDR you should get a set of Cokin filters as use them as you go, they are pretty cheap to get started with - and give some great effects.
