Dont go to Yosemite first, you wont want to leave...
Yosemite has such a vast amount of subject matter, half dome, glacier point, el capitan, yosemite falls, actually there are at least 1/2 dozen really great falls, and to the right of the entrance is mariposa grove with HUGE pinecones and sequoias. Tunnel view to the left will give you the classic, El Capitan, bridalveil fall shots. Glacier point is a must photo, McDurk meadow is interesting on the valley floor, as well as Roaring river falls. Tenaya Lodge on the right side of the road before the entrance has some incredible flowers and variety. Being there made me wish I did night sky photography- when I was there it was so crisp and the skys were so dark as there isnt alot else around, showing gazillions of stars, that felt like you could reach out and touch them. Having spent a week in Kings Canyon and Sequoia, Sequoia wins hands down, I found Kings Canyon lacking in punch, except for the Merced River. Sequoia Grove has all the classic huge trees, bears and some very interesting and photogenic stopping spots along the main road. Sounds like, from your itinerary you will have a great trip no matter where you end up. |

In San Fransisco if you go to Golden Gate Park I think you will be able to get some pretty good shots of the golden gate bridge, you could also take the boat ride out to Alcatraz and get some pictures of Alcatraz island, also there is a place called Lombard Street and it is a beautiful windy brick road down one of the SF hills. Another place you might check out is China Town, I have never been there, but it is also another touristy place in San Fran. Finally, if you go to the wharf (Pier 39) you might be able to get some nice shots out at the ocean.

Assuming your driving, you've got about a 1200 mile loop going to locations that are all of the 'I could spend a week here taking pictures'... one thing I would look at is reservations, all of these places are SWAMPED as far as camping/hotels/motels in summertime.

All of California is beautiful. I'd just bought my Canon D40 and took 2000 shots out there experimenting. Just make sure you have enough cards to go mad! The range of scenery you will see is astounding and you will find so many places no one even suggested to you! I love Yosemite and they have trips you can take with photographers so make sure you find out about those. Remember take lots of memory and don't forget to have a good time too. I was very taken with Siesta Lake on the way up to Tuolomne Meadows. Colours were fantastic - I went in October last year.
