While it certainly looks edited, I don't think I would necessarily have thought the light rays themselves were artificial -- just that the whole scene has been saturated/leveled/etc. -- kind of cool.

To be honest, I think the HDR looks overprocessed. The photo also has no foreground interest - it's all middle and background.

I don't think it's overexposed or if it is it doesn't bother me as it helps set the mood along with the dramatic sky. The light rays wouldn't stand out as much if it were lighter. However a couple of notes on the rays themselves. One they seem too wide - I don't think the rays naturally would project that widely across the image. More importantly they would be duller on the sides and brighter in the middle - right. So that's the big one for me if you are trying to make this look real. I like it though great job. Maybe if you selected the highlights of the image (switch to channels and command click on RGB layers to select highlights in PS) and then applied the rays to only the highlights and then use a layer mask and a reduced opacity brush you could paint out some of the rays on the sides.
