Default Rocky Shoreline

I wanted to catch a shot of a wave hitting this rocky shoreline, so i got down as low as i could and placed the camera on a rock and then was surprised by this rogue wave that crashed in front of me. I grabbed the camera in time and rolled out of the way of the spray.

Coolum

Exposure: 0.3
Aperture: f/18.0
Focal Length: 18 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0 EV

Thought i would add the shot straight from the camera unedited to give a before and after look at the photo. As you can see i have done some editing but no HDR.

Nicely done! You caught that wave at just the right moment for some real drama. The waves in the background add some more good motion, too. Not to mention, there are some really cool clouds. So overall, excellent.

Hi David,

I particularly like this shot. I've got something similar in my portfolio. Its such a rush when you're dealing with the sea and spray and still manage to pull something like this off. Great job and well done.

Thanks,

I'm going to assume that you're talking to batch and not me. :P

I do agree however -- I love spending time on the shore of our Great Lake (Superior, that is) and playing with waves, wind, and water. It's a wonderful feeling.

Amazing photo. I must ask, how did you get the photo to look like cartoonish? Also what was your shutter speed set at?

Wow, excellent shot! And you were so lucky to get that wave crashing too...you must have a really fast shutter speed. The water looks great.

What do you mean by "cartoonish"? I can't make sense of that.

Great shot,

I'm not 100% sold on the motion blur on the waves???

I''d love to see how it would have looked if the wave was captured just a little crisper.

I love the composition! But something isn't right. Did you use HDR to get the exposure range? It looks a bit artificial. The rocks and surf look a bit too bright for a scene with the sun so low in the sky. The exposure of the water seems the same up front as it does on the horizon. Also, the cloud bases look pretty bright considering the sun is behind them. Ditto for all the rocks. Overall, the exposure looks too even which gives it the "artificial" look.

These are usually signs of using HDR techniques to even out the exposure in images with tons of contrast, such as a sunrise or sunset. That is what Ishyid means by "cartoonish".

That's exactly what I was thinking. It looks a little artificual.
