long exposures during the day

I'm really new at this. I have always loves taking photos, but have just recently been trying to figure out my camera and what it can really do. I would like to take photos of waterfalls and capture the movement in the photos. How would I get the long exposure without capturing too much light in the photo. Should I use some kind of filter maybe?

Neutral density filters. Yup. That's what they're great for. Also works wonders at erasing tourists when you expose for half a minute or more.

Another tip is to go early in the morning before the sun rises or hits the water, so as to prevent over exposure and glare on the water.
