Just another random thought - if it was windy and you were doing longish exposures, could it be motion-blur, moving trees, leaves etc?

I did a search and found this on the DPS. I knew I read somewhere that an IS or VR lens will look for movment while on a tripod, and can actually cause problems.
Image Stabilization (and vibration reduction) lenses look for vibrations in your camera in order to reduce it - however if they don’t find any (like when you are using a Tripod) they actually can cause it - and as a result actually cause camera shake. http://digital-photography-school.co...ion-on-tripods |

Thank you all for great feed back...
too bad for all those photos taken from Griffith Observatory and Mullholand Drive of LA at night. Just by chance, I arrived just in time for sunset at Venice Beach and did not have the time to set a tripod. The hand held results turned out to be better. Lession learned. I hope I remember because many times I find myself forgetting the camera on the previous setting when moving from one place to another... it is frustrating when you need to shoot fast. |

According to my manual you don't have to turn off IS when using a tripod. I believe the newer IS lenses do not need to have the IS switched off unless you want to save battery power.
