Default Rain!

I'm going backpacking/photographing (and a little kayaking too) this weekend and it's supposed to be raining. Any advice on how to protect my gear. I've never really done much in the rain and I'm excited for some moody rain pictures. I'm interested if anyone has any nuggets of advice from experience.

Thanks!

An All-Weather bag would be ideal, as well as a rain guard for the camera proper. There was some talk a few days ago about this kinda thing, im sure the thread is around here somewhere

A waterproof bag would be top of the list. Most cameras can withstand taking a few pics in the rain as long as you don't leave them in the wet. Take it out to take pics and then put it back again.

I remember about 10 years ago my Dad's film camera came a cropper at Niagra Falls, not because it got wet but because there was so much moisture in the air it got into the camera just through it hanging round his neck the whole time and fried the electrics.

I think there are threads on DPS detailing DIY methods for protection, if you don't want to spend out on manufactured waterproof products.

I was taking pics on the snow today and as detailed above, made sure I wiped and dried all bits and pieces as soon as possible. I also have silica gel in my bag which helps.

I made a rain proof / splash proof bag from a poly bag with an elastic band around the lens..............all very rudamentary and basic, but functional, cheap and did the job nicely.
