Question How to take a picture of a Frozen Lake?

As alot of people know it is very cold right now...our lake which is a very pretty lake in Southern Il is frozen and I would like to get some nice shots of it. Could someone possibly give me tips on shooting this kind of picture? Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny all day and of course with the bright sky, frozen lake and so much area I am not sure where to start. I know that is alot to ask, but if someone has taken similar pics maybe you could give me some tips on shutter speed and aperture? Thank you!

My suggestion would be to go close to either sunrise or sunset. I like the effect of the sidelighting and the great shadows ... not to mention the colors

There is another one here in case you care to look - http://www.flickr.com/photos/mseigafuse/3191731712/

You can click on the more properties link on Flickr to get the exposure settings, but your mileage will vary. Not sure if you have snow on your frozen lake or not - it looks cool to me

Dress warm and good luck!

I realize this won't help much, but I would suggest just going out and having fun. That is one of the joys of a digital camera. Take a few hundred shots and learn what works and what doesn't. Regardless of what you are shooting I would think the basic rules apply. Try to put into practice some of the ideas of rules of thirds, framing and others. As for shutter and aperture, this will vary depending on where you are, where the sun is, what you are trying to capture, and a million other things. If you have no idea where to start then use the Av or Tv mode and just enjoy taking pictures. Also remember that there are fun pictures to have that don't capture the entire lake. In a situation like this there are opportunities for landscape, general, and macro pictures alike.

Again, I am sorry if this doesn't help but it is what I would do. Just go out and have fun.

I have to say just the one thing - the photo on the flickr...... just frame nicely and be happy with the view.
Great shot.

Thank you! I have taken some photos with snow on our lake and have not added them yet. I am hoping they are much better than my first ones.

I would have to agree that sunrise/set is the best time. Here is an image I took last year in later winter. The composition isn't perfect...too centered and the horizon cuts the picture in half...but I love the way the ice looks. It didn't look anything like that an hour later when the sun was higher in the sky.

Navcom...that is a good picture. Puts mine to shame On the weekends I have been trying to go out to different areas and take different pictures of places I will have to try to go more towards sunset and sunrise. Thanks for the help.
