Thanks everyone for great advice.
I did not use a filter. Am very new to digital photography and have actually never used filters. The lense I used came with the camera (a christmas gift - and was part of a promotion package). It is a Schneider-Kreuznach lense. Also says on the lense: D-XENON 1.4.0 -5.6 50 -200mm ED (o struck through)52mm. This will mean something or everything to you guys. Most of it is still Greek to me. I decided to wait for a good sunset day and make notes of the different settings I used (I know this info comes with the photos on the camera) and have these to hand for future reference. See if I can find out if it was apperture or the quality/type of lense I used. Meya |

From the pattern (six "petals") I would guess that your lens has six blades that control the aperture.
