I think you have to be careful not to think too much about the camera side of things - how fast is the snow falling? How much light is availble? I think a lot of your settings depend on the subject.

Depending on what look you want, some negative exposure compensation and zooming in would feature the snowflakes larger. When you really look at snow in overcast light, it's not really white, so your method looks good. It comes down to what you want. Experiment with flash, too:
