Default Snow picture question

We are getting a ton of snow right now... big fat flakes! I was wondering what settings i could use to get the best exposure of individual snowflakes against a treeline... I have a nikon D60. any help would be greatly appreciated!

anthonybeard,

Well, it's a Fuji S3100, at ISO 64, f/5, 1/420sec., 36mm, 0.9 exposure compensation at 8AM.

I think you have to be careful not to think too much about the camera side of things - how fast is the snow falling? How much light is availble? I think a lot of your settings depend on the subject.

Default well,

in this case, the wind was blowing fairly fast, but there was also a lot of light.

Perhaps a little more exposure either half or one full stop, just to whiten the snow a bit. Just a suggestion.

anthonybeard,

Depending on what look you want, some negative exposure compensation and zooming in would feature the snowflakes larger. When you really look at snow in overcast light, it's not really white, so your method looks good. It comes down to what you want.

Experiment with flash, too:
