Please any suggestions on camera settings would be appreciated, I have only just got a Canon 1000D and never tried night shots. Please comment.

I need some help here. Is this a coastline shot with waves breaking over rocks in the foreground? As a minimum, please post shutter speed, aperture, ISO and focal length of lens used. Also ask any specific questions you may have unless you are looking for a general critique. Add any additional data such as color temperature, lighting, use of filters, etc. that you feel may help the person offering the critique. You will be more likely to receive feedback the easier you make it for the reviewer.
As for your night shot, you have two separate images which don't really come together because of the large amount of "black space." The shot is not in focus. Did you use a sturdy tripod? Keep shooting. I'll be happy to help where I can.

I agree on the focus issue, switch to manual focus for a shot like this, hard for the autofocus to lock on. You do have 2 shots here the upper shot & the lower right..focus on one to the exclusion of the other.

So you have choices: Raise the sea or sink the land. Either way it's easy to do in GINMP.

Blurred the background a bit as well
