Post How to get 14 points star filter?

If you go here you will see that it has 14 points coming out of each light point. I am so new to this Star Filter thing. So, If anyone knows how to get this kind of effect on the picture? I would really want to know.

Thank you

i think you have to to use an aperture like 18+ to get the stars.

If you search on here there are a couple of threads.

I can't seem to find any evenly spaced 14-point filters. Cokin offers a 16-point star filter, and Tiffen offers the hyper star and hollywood star filters, which look like they generate about 14 points.

As to how they're used, you just apply them like any other filter on your lens, and turn them like a CPL to change the direction of the star points. Any point-sources of light will interact with lines in the filter that will create the pattern. I've never tried stacking them before, but that would be something to try. Although I don't think there are any 7-point filters to double up on to get to 14 points anyhow.

Something like this can also be done in post, but how depends on what software you use.

Those stars may just be a result of a long exposure. I don't have a star filter but was able to get some starts on street lights in this photo:

Unfortunately, RawStudio didn't preserve the EXIF data so I can't tell you what the aperture and shutter speeds were. I'm pretty sure the aperture was around f/11 and the shutter speed measured in seconds. If I remember, I'll look tonight when I get home.

That's really good to know. Because I feel like I couldn't find any star filter that has the effect. I would really love to see the EXIF data for that picture if you have it. Please post it back when you find the data. Thank you very much.

I'll e-mail myself a reminder to go look for it. One of these days I'm going to write a shell script to put the exif data back in my files!
