OK so no suggestions yet?
Let me start ... today I went for a drive to my sister's place in Pakenham to check on her parrot as she is away for the weekend. From there, drove to Tooradin for a look around and discovered a lovely foreshore there, with a boat loading ramp and a pier. Hardly anyone there, no tourists either, which was surprising for a weekend. The fact it was low tide was probably another reason. Most people were hanging around the picnic area so that left the foreshore free of people except for pelicans and sea gulls. The pelicans were lovely, quite entertaining! Unfortunately it was a very hot sunny day so the sun was high overhead and no clouds so not ideal conditions for photo taking. But I can see this as a place to go back to for either a sunrise or sunset shoot. Has anyone been to Tooradin? (Victoria, Australia) Taken any good shots there? Please share if you have any! Cheers |

For me atleast, landscape photography is fun because of 50% exploration and 50% actual photography. I love exploring new places, ones that other local photographers may have missed. Granted there are not too many spots like that left anymore but still I like to explore and shoot less known spots around the city.
I don’t know much about Melbourne so I can’t give you exact locations. But what I usually do is look at the Google view of the general area I’m interested in and try to find any potential landscape spots. Usually Street View gives a good idea of the geography of the location. Another idea is to search what other local photographers are shooting on Flickr. I’m contacts with lot of local photographers in my city so I can go through their pictures to find a location that I’ve never been to before. It’s also good to have a “to-shoot” list - so when I come across a good picture I can add the location to my list so I don’t forget about it. |

AshNZ ... thanks for your tips using Google Maps and flickr. Will check it out.
Definitely need to change tactics and think of it as a way to discover, explore the places nearby. I did that on the weekend by going to Tooradin but will need to plan it beforehand as I went without any preparation or any idea of what I was going to do. Thanks again! |

If you're happy to drive a few hours, there are heaps of great places. I hate that I don't have a car, public transport is a nightmare to get out of town.. I moved here 1.5 years ago and still have soooo many places to discover, so if you find a cool place, please let me know.
![]() I guess these are the obvious ones that you've probably already thought about, but: -Dandenong Ranges, -Yarra Valley, -Wilsons Prom, -a but further out, but I loved this place: Mount Buffalo Well, I suppose all the national parks in Victoria will make the list, great ocean road, grampians, ... etc. etc. |
