Default Autumn is here, Winter fast approaching

Whilst those in the Northern Hemisphere are ramping up into spring, some of use are starting to wrap up for the fast approaching Winter.

What I'd like to hear are some of the tips and tricks you discovered this Autumn and Winter. What did you learn that helped your Winter photography, or where did you go to get some Winter shots. What would you have liked to have done this Winter but didn't get a chance?

Cheers Gav

Default rough winter this year

it's finally over but we had record snow here in Ontario Canada. It was quite fun actually. Even better since we don't drive ha ha.
Well I find it's best to get out when the snow is fresh to get the un-trampled stuff. Just dress for it so you can focus on the shooting and not have to worry about keeping warm.

For the autumn: If the trees turn from green to all colours, capture that. It's beautiful. From the point where most leaves are still green to the moment where most leaves are already on the ground. But you'll need sun.
Or capture foggy scenes. You have to get out early for that, but it's worth it.

For the winter, if you have snow: Don't set your exposure to having the snow white like snow should be - you'll loose all texture on the snow. Doesn't work.

For all seasons: Get out and shoot. ;-)

Just wonder how much winter snow will still be about, come spring. Hubby and I will be taking our very first overseas trip and heading over The Pond spending nearly all of September there. ½ the time on the NI and the second ½ on the SI.

Good question! I'm not sure the extreme of your seasons, but I found I was not prepared clothing- and gear-wise to go out in cold and/or rainy weather. Plus, I was not prepared "emotionally" to get my bottom outside to be uncomfortable to get some good shots.

Maybe some rainboots (that would double as snowboots), some kind of poncho to brave a bit of rain. Something portable to sit on low when the ground is not accomodating. Also, remember to look for breaks in the weather. If it's raining, keep an eye out for when it lets up a bit so you can go out. And, since not all fall/winter shots are red leaves and sparkling snowdrifts, google some images of dead leaves and grass, windy photos, etc. The stuff that makes for interesting photos that does NOT make it onto postcards.

Good luck!

Think I'll start a thread on the opposite!
