Default Can anyone tell me why....

...there is a greenish shadow in this picture of the moon I took last night?

Please excuse the blurriness of the shot, the camera was semi propped on the car window, and I was just experimenting. This is not a keeper photo but I got a few shots where this green "shadow" appeared. All of the shots with a shutter speed from 1.5" up had this. the faster the shutter speed the closer the "green shadow" is to the real moon. I am very curious. Is it my lens?

I do not see a green shadow. It's actuly a good shot, in fact my only suggestion is to shoot on manual. As this is way overexposed. Most of my moon shots are taken at iso500, f/8 and 1/100th.

Do you have a UV filter on the lens? If so, you might want to try again w/o it. I've seen artifacts like that introduced by filters.

The green "shadow" is at the bottom left of the moon. It's probably more like a reflection.
I did take some other shots with a faster shutter speed, but I kept f/5.6 (I forgot to switch to manual as I had been doing an assignment using Av)

this one was better and no green thing around.

The only filter I have on is a Tiffen haze that a photographer friend gave me. Is that a UV? I only have it on to protect my lens.

Just a thought: if it was propped against the car window, possibly it's a lens flare from the moon's reflection off of the glass?

Would this happen with the window glass behind the camera? I was inside the car. (being winter here it was a bit chilly )

That's what I was thinking. Looks like a flare-bug to me. Considering the shape/orientation, I'd also say it is a reflection (of some kind) of the moon. Maybe light caught between the filter/lens?

So, in order to not have this by accident I should remove the filter and try again on a clear night, correct? Or I could try to exploit the green thing and call it a UFO
thanks for helping me to understand!

Or if you have your lens hood, just make sure to put that on.
