Default shooting the moon

I've been told that this is an illusion. The moon or sun only looks larger because it is of the buildings, trees etc. surrounding it. But when it's up higher, there's nothing to compare it to, thus it seems smaller. Sometimes the image will be edited and enlarged for effect. Correct me if I'm wrong.
