Wink Antelope in the summer- lens???

Every year my family spends a week at Lake Powell- and this year, I've promised myself that I'm going to get to Antelope Canyon, AZ to take some pictures. I'm needing some advice from anyone who has been there.( I've heard that it is one of the most photographed canyons???) Specifically what lens (should it be wide angle, and what to rent since I only own kits lens and my "nifty fifty") and what time of day to go -I have heard that July is great, but one site said the best time is mid-day which seems to go against what I've read about landscapes. Do I need an external flash, since it is a slot canyon? Polorizing filter?? ANY advice would be greatly appreciated- I'd love just a couple of great pictures for myself and my family, since this area has been such a huge part of my family traditions for as long as I can remember...
