Default Hyperfocal Distance Question?

Apologies in advance for what may be a simple question to some.

I am trying to find an answer in simple terms for when I use a chart or calculator for hyperfocal distances, do I need to take into account the Focal Length Multiplier of my camera?

For example, if my camera was at 55mm at f8, the hyperfocal distance would be 20m. Is this correct or should I calculate as such: 55x1.6=88mm for a hyperfocal distance of 52m

And is it recommended to shoot at the widest aperture possible to achieve focus to infinity for landscape photography or is it best to stop down?

Regards
Robbie

No, the focal length you enter into a Hyperfocal calculator is the actual focal length of the lens. However, the size of the circle of confusion that the hyperfocal equations use can be tied to the size of your sensor (depending on how the CoC is calculated). So the fact that you're using a crop camera vs. a full frame does play into getting different hyperfocal distances for the same aperture/focal length combinations with different sensor sizes.

Try this DoF/hyperfocal calculator: Online Depth of Field Calculator

Thank you very much for that.
That was exactly what I wanted to know. I have been playing around with that particular DOF calculator which is what prompted the question.
