I am going on a trip out west in June and will be doing a lot of moving around from place to place. What I wonder is what is the lens that I have that will make the most sense to use the majority of the time. I won't be able to make quick lens changes and I don't want to miss shots because I chose the wrong lens. I have a Canon 7D, a 50 mm 1.4/ 28-135 4-5.6 and a 70-300. Going to Yellowstone, Tetons, Glacier Park.
So what do you think? |

What are you planning on shooting the most when you get there? Landscapes? Wildlife? Or the people you took the trip with? Honestly, my druthers would be to practice lens changes and take all three. None of those is a particularly large or cumbersome lens. And if I had to whittle it down to two, I'd probably get myself an ultrawide, and add the 70-300, because my interests would be landscape and wildlife, and I tend to travel solo.

Well, I am more concerned about the landscapes and with some luck, the wildlife. I won't always be able to just stop and take a picture, I may have to catch them on the fly, for instance in the open air bus that drives you up into Glacier Natl. I know they have certain places to stop but there may be something I really want to get while we are traveling along. So the question becomes then what's the best that will get the most with the least chance of messing it up (that would be me doing the messing up).

Take them all. You are going to want to use them all at some given time on the trip. Learn to change lenses really fast and well and you shouldn't have to worry about missing too much or getting dust on the sensor.

For the wildlife the 70-300mm would be cool, for the landscape the 28-135mm at 28mm.
I think you should get a wider angle lens for more spectacular shots.

If it has to be only one lens - Take the 70-300mm

Take the 70-300 for the possible wildlife shots and occasional landscape.
Take a P&S for most of the landscapes and "vacation snaps".
