I liked the idea of this tree standing out above the others in the sun. Am I crazy?

No, you're not crazy.
I like the idea, but perhaps would not center the tree. I know different perspectives would be tough when you take a shot near midday, it can limit your available angles. This could be really nice as the sun was setting, too.

Default did you use a tripod?

it looks a touch blurry. or did you jpeg it? Use a tripod when you can. I do. No matter how still you think you can hold the camera, it's good to be sure with a tripod.

This is a rather nice choice for a subject for your shot, and I agree with Saralonde about the position of the tree. From what I can see in the image, it was pretty close to midday when you took the shot and the sun entered into the photograph at the top right hand corner which could be eliminated because it is awfully bright. Bright sunny midday times are one of the most difficult times to get pleasing light on landscape scenes. The light is so bright and harsh it creates shadows. Many people like this time of day because it is a good time for front lit scenes and not much problem with exposure if the sun is at your back.. (The sunny 16 rule of the old Kodak days) I believe you can find scenes that are pleasing to look at if you can add other interesting elements into the image. examples: streams, rivers, pretty clouded skies Tree scenes with some shade creating different contrast, sun going behind clouds and creating contrasting shadows on the landscape etc. There are images are out there, but you have to work more to find interesting elements for your image to overcome the direct uninteresting light of the sun.

I believe that some of the best times for landscape photography are during the times when the light is most pleasing to the subjects which are usually found around sunset and sunrise. This kind of light adds another dimension to the scene and can enhance your subject tremendously.

I like your shot. But I agree, it seems a bit out of focus. I actually like the sunflare too. It adds something to it.
