Is there anyway to remove the shadow from the far side of the barn without over exposing the rest?

Do you mean when taking the picture or with post processing? I think you did a good job of getting them both into an acceptable exposure range, but the lit portion of the barn does end up being a little overexposed.

If you've never used HDR, this is the kind of application where it shines.

You lost me with the reference?

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, and it's a way of putting the best parts of multiple photographs together into one picture. Try putting it in as a tag on flickr and see what you come up with. If you want a free program to try it out, check out this thread by WooD, where some have been talking about qtpfsgui. (The most popular program is called Photomatix, which I highly recommend but it's not free).
