Default Can you help me take photos sunrise/sunset at Uluru

Hi everyone - we are about to take off for 4 weeks to central Australia - amongst other places Uluru (Ayers Rock). The most photographed time is sunrise and sunset when the rock turns all sorts of amazing colours. I want to do it justice, as this is my first time to Uluru, and I don't know when I will every be able to return again.

Can you help me get it right? I am using a Canon 450D. What settings should I use, especially shutter speed, exposure, white balance etc etc.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you!

Thanks also for the recent thread about Canyon photography - as we will also be doing some of that too in central Australia. I know it can be very tricky in gorge country with light coming in and hitting one wall and not the other, shadows one side and over exposed the other. You can't be at every place at that perfect time of day!

Nobody can possibly give you the exact settings you'll need. That's impossible.

If you're doing a sunset, you'll want to take several: Uluru is known for the sun setting in bands on the rock itself, so take a bunch to show the progression.

Default sensitive sites

Hi Jill

Uluru has several sites which are not to be photographed. The tradititional owners do not want some images to be photographed. (exampl: the walk)
There is a mini video on google video which shows the sensitive locations
Type in Uluru Kata Tjuta in google video and you'll find it. Its about 18 min.

It shows respect not photograph these sensitive sites.

Hope you'll make some great pictures,

I certainly will be taking lots - But should I be using a slower shutter speed? or faster?

Thanks Peter. I will take a look at the video. I have researched on the net and know there are a bunch of restrictions, and fees to be paid if I intend selling work.
