How to take great reference photos for painting

I take mostly landscape photos which I plan to paint when I get home after a trip. Once home, I realize the photos are not good enough to use as references. Does anyone know of a book or article that can help me?

The very excellent Audubon Guide to Nature Photography has a couple sections on landscapes that are great for a biginner/intermediate level.

Landscape photography is, in my opinion, one of the trickiest forms in terms of being a lot harder than it looks. Don't get discouraged.
