Lightbulb Tips requested for canyon photography

Hi DPS friends,

I am going to visit a few US canyons next week and would love to get your tips on getting some nice photos as it's a once in a lifetime trip for me.

The places I am visiting are: grand canyon south rim, bryce canyon, antelope canyon, monument valley.

The equipment I have:
EOS 7D with Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8, Sigma 10-20mm f3.5-f4.5, Canon 50mm f1.8.

I found a site with a hyperfocus distance chart, however I wouldnt know how far the subject is so don't know how to use it

Also any ideas for unusual shots, settings most welcome.

Thanks,

Prashad

It's standard landscape photography.

See this post, on this site.

11 Surefire Landscape Photography Tips

As always the time of day plays a major part. (see #9)

I would take polarising filters.

If you are on a tour and have no control over when you are shooting I would bracket my exposures especially if the lighting conditions are high contrast.

Re Bryce:
These are print scans from a vacation 10 years ago. I was using film.

(1)Everybody gets the standard pics from the rim. Like this.

Looking into Bryce Canyon

(2) Get down into it! However if it is a bright sunny day it will be extreemly contrasty so bracket and combine your pics in PPing. Here is an example - heading down into the canyon.

Decending into the hoodoos

(3) It is another world down there.

Take water!

Canyons can be tough to shoot at mid day because of the harsh light and deep shadows. Try early in the morning (sunrises can be amazing) and evening. You also might want to consider shooting after sunset where you get beautiful colors and great cloud and star images.
