I just rented a 10-22mm lens for a camping trip next week. This is my first experience with a wide angle lens. It arrived today and I'm hoping to spend the next few days playing around with it. Any advice when using it?

Beautiful wide angle shots! Wide angle lens has been on my wish list for a while too.

@ mikeap I've had a 10-22mm for a year now and all I'd say is, get closer than you think you should! You'll often find your right next to your subject (inches!) but it will still seem different looking through the viewfinder. A shift of only a few inches can greatly alter an image when working this wide. Also pay attention to keeping enough interest in your shots, super wides pick up such a large field of view it can be hard to generate good composition without including unwanted extras around the edges. Hope that helps,

Paul

I'm very impressed. I've read so many mixed reviews about the super wides labeling them as highly specialized lenses that will spend most of the time in the bag. Your before and after makes a convincing case for the use of such a lens in a variety of settings. You went from rather boring snapshot to dramatic photograph with the compositional flexibility you gained with the lens.

A little late getting back, but thanks for the tip. It was certainly a different experience than what I'm used to shooting with. I posted one of my shots here. Mountain view

Be careful with the polarizer on the wide angle as you can/will get different degrees of polorization across something that wide (Polarizers)

Another thing worth trying is using it for portraits... You can get some great effects with it...

Anyway, here are a couple of my wide angles from Nepal / Everest Base Camp

Awesome! Professional quality pictures

I always love the distortion effect from a wide lens.
I should start saving for a nice wide lens I think. The widest I have is 18mm of my kit lens.
