Default distorted sunset???

Why did my sunset get distorted like this?? How do I avoid making the same mistake next time??

I think the distortion is due to to a combinaiton of the athmospheric conditions (clouds) can distort the light but most distortion will come from a large aperture. Next time try something like f11 for aperture, it will cause the sun to be a bit more round and even star shaped.

That definitely looks like atmosphere (clouds/moisture) to me. If it didn't look that way in person, the difference is probably due to the exposure time.

Thanks for your help. I took this pic...one of many...last winter in Jamaica. I definitely don't think the sun was distorted like that to the naked eye. I will try to play around with the aperature and shutter speed next month when we go this time!

Could it have something to do with the shutter speed as well? My first thought is that a longer shutter speed tracked the suns movement towards the horizon just a bit.

1/105th of a second (faster than the blink of an eye), if you manage to see the movement of the sun, your good.
