I discovered DPS yesterday and think this forum is the greatest idea ever.
That said, I'm trying to convince my dad (a fellow amateur photographer) that it's worth posting some of his photos here for critique. This is one he took on a road trip this weekend. Sorry that I don't have any of the file data to accompany it. If I can get some people to leave comments, I can show him how you all can help him (and me!) become better photographers. Specifically, how is the composition of this piece? Effective? Or is there too much water?

The subject is nice and the angle on the boats works well, but the tree detracts from the shot as do the two bits of grass that cut across the frame.
It's a very peaceful looking scene which might benefit from having the horizon more towards half-way point to balance water & sky. I've attached a very rough and ready edit as an example.

thanks so much! I agree - better without the tree. i also like the way you've composed this picture. Thanks for removing that grass line as well. It looks way better without it.
I've sent your comments to my dad (whose picture this is) and i'm sure that now he'll want to sign up here at DPS. Meanwhile, I just learned how to insert photos into my messages at the normal size (not thumb nail size) so I am excited to start doing that. DPS rocks!
