Default cityscape -depth of field / focal point / composition

This is a picture from my home town, the picture doesn't really show the scene I was trying to capture, I have seen many similar pictures looking really nice and am not sure how this picture could be improved. This was a sunny day and I am standing in a dark tunnel looking out.

I think a wider depth of field would help, bring the whole picture into focus especially behind the door? What do you think?
I focused on the door is that the correct place?
I placed the door relating to the rule of thirds (well close) should I have chosen a different composition?

Taken with Canon EOS 500D, 48mm focal length using kit 18-55mm lens, Aperture f5.6, shutter speed 1/500, ISO 800

Thanks for your comments, I am reall a total beginner so appreciate any feedback you can give.

One thing I notice is that my eye is drawn to the car. I wonder if it would be better if you cropped it out and cropped out some off the bottom as well. This may put more emphasis on the doorway which is probably what you intended.

i would agree with both above and think a crop and B&W conversion works well for this shot

I like the crop done by Technical Tim but I like the color version better because the contrast of the doors and shutters works better for me than in the b&w.
