Default Storm King Art Center - Composition Crit

Storm King Art Center, 11.08.2009
(click for larger versions)

Looking for input on this shot, specifically regarding the composition. I really liked this but I'm not sure what others think. Any other criticism is welcome, too.

I would have liked to stop down for sharpness and extra DOF, but we were riding a shuttle at the time so I had to compose quickly.

Canon 300D, 50mm, f/2.8, ISO 100, 1/2000sec

Very cool shot! And I love the exposure and colors. In fact, the yellow and green colors of the grass are so lovely that I wish I could see more of the hill on which this sculpture is resting. Maybe you could crop the shot a tad so that the sculpture will sit more on the bottom left third intersection. Awesome photo!

I'd crop it tighter on the left and top, go further left than the rule of thirds.

Like the above comment, I would want to see more hill. Since it kind of represents lower 1/3 of your shot there should be more of it rather than the sliver you kept. Otherwise, really nice color and composition!!

Okay, thanks folks. As I said, I was rushed to take the shot, I plan on going back this year so hopefully I can take a more focused photo.

There are actually many many similar shots of this sculpture (as expected, this is a popular place to photo; I describe it as a place where expensive cameras gather, attached to people), I'll have to take a look at what others did and see if I can come up with something fresh.

Any other thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks again!

What a great shot, simple with beautiful colours. The use of negative space is great, so good in fact, I think I'd like to see even more of the gorgeous blue sky (and slightly more hill).

Shot wider, I think I would have aimed to get the main body of the sculpture on the lower left third point and present more sky.

That said, it works as it is. The only minor change I would make is to clone out what looks like the remnants of a con-trail in the right of the shot.

Interesting, I wasn't sure if anyone would comment on that. There's one directly above the sculpture too, if you look closely. I wasn't sure if they added or detracted from the hsot; I go back and forth on that.

Thanks for the comments!
