Default A Rookie Shot

I just got my Canon EOS 500D as a gift from my wife this Christmas so I am really into practice and discovery mode these days.thanks to DPS, I am getting a lot of inspirations, tips and useful tutorials..I am still carefully studying each camera setting, trying to depart from Auto Mode as soon as I can..tonight though, I discovered the beauty of Shutter Priority.

As I was driving home, I decided to give Capturing Light Trails a try..so I parked my car and walk to the nearest bus stop..I don't have my tripod so I just positioned my camera on a wall and flip the setting to Shutter Priority..I took several shots until I felt satisfied with the results..

Here's my First Success..I welcome your comments..thanks and more power!

technically right, try using a smaller aperture, say f13 to get a much more stary effect from the street lamps.. you'll like it better. this will force you to use a longer shutter speed 6 sec....

Wal is correct. I love nothing more then taking night shots with a small aperture to get diffraction. The other suggestion I have is get a lens hood. I do notice some flare in your photo, and this should make your photos much cleaner looking. There is nothing wrong with lens flare as long as that is the result you are looking to get. But certainly getting rid of the flare would help this photo I feel

@ big nick: thanks..regarding the lens flare, I noticed that too and being new to this, I thought 'twas normal..

I have a Protective Lens or filter (?) attached, does it affect the shot?

Thanks again.

At night I do prefer to shoot with no filters as light seems to reflect off of them and seems to make like "ghost lights" But that is flare which is different and a hood should rectify that.

Go you for trying out an ambitious shot as a new photographer!

A smaller aperture definitely wouldn't hurt here, but you captured great colors.
