I came across this scenic view this morning in Zion National Park. The sun was just about to come up and these trees and bushes had ice crystals covering them with the sun hitting them on the back side. The first pics I tried had the highlights blown out so bad I switched to manual and increased the shutter speed to try and get the right shot. It darkened the picture and this is what I got. What should have I tried? I panicked and let a good oppurtunity get away.

the only thing i can think of is if you have a tripod, expose for the sky/tree and then take another shot exposing for the rock face and blend them both in photo shop, i don't really have the expertise to grant you better ideas so sorry about that, it's a good composition idea though.
"I panicked" i get that sometimes lol

I used a monopod to try and stabalize as best I could. I read about exposing for a certian scene and then taking the picture with something being exposed. I wish someone could explain how you do that on a D90 camera. I don't understand how to expose for something and then take the picture. How does metering work?

Spot Metering might of been better, i would consult your d90 manual and have a good read about Metering.
