Default Winter In Silverton Colorado

Photobucket

Try as i may, i just couldn't seem to get a crisp image. This was taken early in the morning with the sun from the West side of the picture. Being a newbie this was the best shot with my new Panasonic Z35. Set in "scene" mode with a -1 EV. I guess that i should have bracketed to start with? I am trying to learn better exposure so any advice would be most welcome.

Regards,

Garry

When you export the image onto your computer, does it give you more EXIF data? Depending how "scene" mode is played out, you might be better off switching into a completely manual mode and setting your aperture and shutter accordingly.

As for composition, it's a beautiful town. If possible, it'd be best to get the mountain tops in the image as well.

Sunvalley,

So you suggest that i roll my mode dial around to "A" or Apperture priority and then set my ISO speed?

I plan to take some more pictures this weekend as we are knee deep in snow here in Castle Rock.

I am trying to better understand exposure so i thought i would just go out and experiment using different set-ups this weekend taking notes after each shot?

Search the articles here in DPS for the Exposure Triangle, and you'll find some great information on the subject.

That said, this is a fabulous subject to photograph, and I hope you try it again. The problem with this shot is that it is bathed in way too much sunlight, causing the uneven lighting that you're seeing in the mountain. Really good landscape photography rarely happens while the sun is up. If you want this shot to work out, try this:

Get yourself a tripod (a cheap walmart one will do if you're just using a point and shoot), and wait for evening, right at sundown. Set this shot up again, put it in Aperture priority mode (f/16 or so) and set your ISO as low as it will go. Use your timer (to avoid camera shake when you push the shutter button), and then fire away. I would love to see your results if you try this. Remember, you can take good photographs even if you don't have a dSLR.

Thumbs up

Very nice depth of field. Great colors. All in all I love the photograph and what you need to fix this image up is small and simple to do. I'de follow the advice of the other members and be sure to correct the horizon. The image is leaning to the right and it's a quick and simple fix in photoshop. All around great, if you print your images be sure to print this one as large as possible without getting digital noise.
