For a black and white photo, yes, I think it's a little too dark.

I saw the word "sunset" in the thread title, and I expected a lot of colors. I think the black and white could work if there were a lot more contrast.

Very evocative shot -- as soon as I saw it, I could feel the sort of quite sadness from the closing of a cloudy day. It's a very still and peaceful scene, but I'm still feeling some moodiness from it.

I agree that a bit lighter, with more contrast, would probably make it more viewable. Also, the horizon is a bit warped -- a simple lens correction filter will take care of that.

Otherwise, I very much like the composition and mood of the photo.

I really like the way the rays poke out of the clouds. I like the mood of this photo, kind of a dark spookie feel to it. I think the darkness/lightness depends totally on the mood your trying set. I like this. The subject is the rocks on the lower right, if I was going to make anything lighter it would be these rocks, to give them more of a dimension that sets them out away from the rest of the photo.

I'm not able to tell "sunset" right away by looking at this photo, which is a definite problem for me. Also yes, it does feel a tad bit dark/underexposed. Just a touch, though, because I like the darker feel of the photo.

I'm definitely enjoying all the different elements of this photo—the streaks in the sky and the smooth water. Also, I don't have an issue with the warped horizon. I like the dimension it adds, but I wouldn't mind seeing an alternative with a straight horizon.

Totally loving this shot.

Before I actually viewed the image, I thought 'oh no, another boring bog-standard over-photoshopped sunset - how can I say something nice about a subject matter that has been done to death'??

But when I saw it - it took my breath away. You have given the sunset purists the 2 finger sign and did your own thing - and it works brilliantly.

I don't agree with others comments regarding contrast etc - I think it is perfect as it is. Actually, it almost appears to have a 3D quality on my apple imac screen.

And you haven't forced a particular position on the viewer either. It's polysemic and can be read as romantic, sad etc etc.

You should be very proud of challenging the norm here and being creative.

If I were you I'd be flogging this around to photo comps.

David

Overall, this is a great shot, and works splendidly as a B&W. The composition and shutter speed are great.

I do, however, agree that it is a bit dark. You could try dodging the clouds in the sky, the rocks, and the brighter parts of the water. This will add contrast and bring out details that appear to be there in the dark shadows. A Curves adjustment would work well, too, for giving it the needed brightness and contrast.

Overall, nicely done. With a little PP, this will be a great shot.
