Default Working with BW

I am trying to work on my composition and focusing. I took these three shots of the same cart, obviously, but i changed position and/or focus point. How could i get more out of the shot, or how could i make the shots better? The sky was overcast in front of me and sunny behind me; i think this may have led to a bit more difficulty than i expected. I still love a couple of these, but i am loking to get a bit better so that i can show improvement with each shot. Please help me out. Even if i can do something in photoshop, i am learning that as well.

I like the composition, I think the first one would be best if you crop in tighter around the right side of the cart and loose some of the foreground. I think the biggest problem for me with the image is the lack of contrast. Everything looks very flat. Maybe best to retry this shot in the early morning or late afternoon when you have your best lighting. If you shot this in RAW you could play with it some to help increase the contrast. Solid start though, nice job.

I'd vote to kick down exposure a notch (a bit overexposed as I see it), while cranking aperature to the lowest value your camera allows. This would allow for a shallower depth of field, separating your subject from the background subtly.

Also, if the BW conversion was done in Photoshop, I'd say explore a couple of alternative processes of getting there, which will provide more contrast. The 'desaturate' feature is often viewed as the least effective.

i essentially agree with everything you have said. One of the amazing things about black and white images are the contrast that they can show, definitely increae the contrast in this image and just turn down the exposure just a bit
