Default Canberra Night

Hi,

This shot was taken around a month ago. I'm very much a beginner in photography and have lots to learn.
I like this shot but still think i am missing something? as I'm fairly new to this i would love any help and tips to make this shot look more attractive to the eye. e.g post proccessing, exposure, sharpness, use different equipment?

Black Mountain Tower

Canon 1000D - EF 18-55mm

approx. can't remember exactly
f/8 and 15-20sec

Thanks in advance for the critique

Try the shot rather earlier in the evening. The only things here are reflections that have no context. Provide some light on the scene to give us a setting

I think the exposure and sharpness is, overall, spot on. On my (calibrated) monitor, I can see plenty of detail, but then, I suppose they don't call it Black Mountain for nothing

The splash of lightning in the north is a nice touch - though I thought is was the moon peeking out from behind the clouds initially.

Some suggestions re composition:
  • The image is a little symmetrical for my tastes, I'd like to see the Telstra Tower offset to a third point (google rule of thirds).
  • There isn't much interest in Lake Burley Griffin, other than the reflections, so the bottom of the shot lacks interest. For me, the interest is in the sky. You might like to try cropping to put the far shore on the third?
  • Your shot is missing a foreground, which would help give scale to the image and add interest to the bottom of the shot. I can't quite picture where you took this shot, but you might like to try including either the closest shore or perhaps a bridge parapet in the foreground?

I think you've done a fine job with the shot and would love to see more.

You're lucky to be in Canberra, there are so many photogenic sites (and sights) around the city that I'd love an opportunity to shoot - Parliament House, Old Parliament House, the War Memorial, the Embassies and High Commissions (though I'm not sure about the legalities of shooting these buildings or at least the reactions of the AFP), anywhere on LBG, the National Museum - I think I need to find a weekend or two to come down for a weekend of photography.

Thanks for sharing your shots with us, I look forward to seeing many more.
