Default trying landscape in istanbul

hi everybody;

I'm probably the most novice photographer ever contributing to the site. And this is my first contri. I want to learn in detail about getting it right; but creating the time to read or attend seminars unfortunately isn't an option for me right now. Maybe in a years' time. (All tied up with work currently)

Anyhow, would really appreciate any practical criticism that would at least get me into taking acceptable photos. I especially have a hard time getting the light right. Take care...

The big tree sticking out into the middle of the photo is a distraction, in my opinion anyways, but I'm pretty novice too, so maybe wait for someone with more experience to post

Agree,tree branches aren't doing you any favours.There are no established landmarks to tell us this is Istanbul.Could be anywhere. I have applied shadow/highlight to lighten fore ground and a sharpening. Ken

Lauren-Ken;

Thanks for the feedback. I agree, the pic doesn't resemble istanbul and even though the branches upfront were intentional, they made it look like a scene from the addams family. There's not a focus on a specific landmark or a theme from anything particular. lighting wasn't good and neither was the focus )

I'll work on my photography a bit more, in the light of the criticisms and post back when I feel I've made the slightest of progress. Thanks once again.

Cheers,

Selim.

By posting your shots to this forum and receiving the feedback you are working on your photography as you put it - Dont feel like you have to go away and not come back until you have improved, this is all part of the process.

As for the shot itself, I would agree with the comments that have already been made. Whenever I take landscape shots I always try to keep in mind a few simple guidelines:
  • A main subject,
  • the rule of thirds,
  • foreground midground and background interest,
  • eliminate distracting objects.
  • keep a straight horizon
  • balance
Your shot could benefit from a few of these pointers, but dont get disheartened - keep shooting and you will get it right!
