Default Sunset with clouds

From Sunset

I was trying to get the rays through the clouds for impact; I probably should have waited another few minutes until the sun was lower. This was shot with full-auto settings, hand-held.

EXIF info:
Nov 27, 2009
Camera: Canon SX100 IS
ISO: 80
Exposure: 1/1250 sec
Aperture: 5.6
Focal Length: 34.9mm
Flash Used: No

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!
Do the clouds look right?
Would you suggest a different ISO or exposure?
Would a different white balance have helped or changed things?

Hi jmb and welcome to DPS. I hope you enjoy being with us and learn as you post like I am doing. Did you take any more of this sky as the clouds moved? I can see what you mean about waiting, the problem being that cloud formations change so quickly. I think you have managed to get a reasonably effective sunflare here. Keep sharing your shots with us. PAUL

I'm not sure I have the technical expertise to comment on your technique, but I'd try my luck again with a cloud that isn't as thick or at a different time. Some factors are just beyond out control.

Hi JMB667,

I think that you did a good job with this image. It is impactful.

I think there is nothing wrong with your ISO or exposure, but of course the camera picked those. A different white balance woould change the photo, but as for it helping... that would be up to you. For example, if the white balance was set cooler, the shadow areas may have a blue tint to them. If it was set higher, the sun and the rays might be oranger. Does your camera allow you to shoot in RAW? If it does, take anouther shot like this and play around with the white balance on the computer.

Thanks for the input, everyone! Not sure when my next cloudy day will be as we're supposed to get rain/snow for the next week straight...this is Oregon, after all.
