Default Experimental Lighting In Joshua Tree

Hi all,

I've been reading the RSS feeds from DPS for some time but this is my first actual post. I took a trip out to Joshua Tree over Thanksgiving break and had some great opportunities to play around with a new 10-22mm lens and 580exii flash with a cactus wireless trigger. These two things opened up a whole new world of photography for me (previously I had only ever shot with a 50mm f1.4 lens), but I still definitely have a ton to learn.

Anyway, I would love to hear some critiques/advice about this experiment with off-camera lighting and a Joshua Tree. Thanks!

Joshua Tree and Shadow

I have no advice to give you.
I just want to say that I adore your picture! It's an amazing shot!
I have the 10-20 and it's major fun indeed.

Hi, Adam.

First of all, welcome to DPS.

You have a great image. The only thing I may suggest is dialing down the power on the flash just slightly - maybe 1/3 stop. Other than that, I don't see anything else I would change.

Off camera lighting is wonderful. I'm getting more and more comfortable with it.

Hi there,
And "Welcome" to a great site and a brilliant community. I hope you enjoy your time here and join in here when you can. As for your image? it's excellent and a real study of a fascinating tree. I really like the detail and composition of this image and also the lighting is pretty cool too. Thank you for sharing it with us and I look forward to seeing more soon.
Have a great weekend.
David.

outstanding. really nice. keep up the good work. kinda agree with nate, you could dial the flash back a bit...but then again it gives it an unearthly feel so you decide what you like!

A beautiful photo. Excellent work. I added it as A FAVE. Where is Joshua Tree located?

Just reviewed your image and thought how much I like these trees as we don't have anything like this over here in the UK. Then I remembered I took a couple of images last year out in the middle of the Nevada desert while our aircraft was refueling and I am sure I they were of similar trees...
So just because your image is so cool and I love these trees, I added mine here as well, hope you don't mind.
David.

You should see how pretty they are when they bloom!

nice photo -

it *might* look a little better if you balanced the flash w/ the ambient more... maybe a little less flash or a little longer shutter... either way it's a nice photo
