Maybe 100 is the base ISO for d80, but for d90 and some other models, Nikon intentionally made ISO 100 as "L 1.0" instead of "100" on your camera so as not to encourage taking pictures at this ISO during normal circumstances. They did it for a reason. It is not true that the lower the ISO the less the noise. Setting the ISO to "LOW" may affect the contrast or whatsoever. But some people say there is not difference. On a recent episode from either "this week in photography" or "photofocus", this has been discussed. You may use L iso's when you need a slower shutter speed.
