Cool Quick shot, lots of color

Took this for a project for a Crime Scene Photography class I'm in. The beginning of this class (in September) is my first real experience with photography. I feel like I'm picking up on the materials and concepts well. I think I have found a new serious hobby!

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (Av mode)
Exposure: 1/50
Aperture: f8
Focal Length: 28mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0 EV

I did play with this picture a little "post production." All I did was adjust the contrast slightly to make the colors pop a little more.

not bad!
just remember to have a subject in every shot. it seems that in this picture, the small house/stable is the subject. however, the trees in the picture is quite overwhelming and steal away my eyes from focusing on the house/stable. IMO.

Do you have anything in particular that you want us to critique? Composition? Color? dof?

Knowing the subject matter for the picture would help. I am wondering if it was composed in a way that is relevant for your class?
You do have some nice colors, especially in the tree off to the right. You have got some good detail in the shadow are, however, in this contrasty light you have to be careful as you will also get some bright (blown out) spots such as the bottom area of grass and the upper right corner.
Just started shooting in Sept? Not a bad start then, keep going.

Sorry, missed that in the description! We were just supposed to capture a high contrast shot. It didn't matter what it had to be of. That is why there isn't an obvious subject in this shot. I was just looking to capture the filtered light and differences between the light and dark areas. The example of the lighting and high contrast exposure is what the goal of the shot was.

Thanks for the feedback!

i really like the colors in this shot, but the orange tree to the right that blocks some of the barn really distracts. it makes me want to take 2 steps to the left so i can see the entire barn.
