Default mechanic

I'm trying to get the mechanics of photography down, exposure, focus, composition just the basics. In this shot I'm interested in how well anyone thinks I'm doing with composition and crop, there are reasons why I've done it this way and I'm wondering how anyone else would do it. Thank you for looking and a special thanks if you care to give an opinion.

Hey there, I love the background of the shot, and maybe you should have emphasised on it instead of the foreground, it seems less captivating. You should have cropped the annoying pole at the extreme right, it will make the pic more clean. Critique aside, this is a good shot.

Yeah, I was wondering about that piling on the right and I think you're right, I've cropped it out along with a bit of the foreground enough to draw more emphasis to the ice house and boat in the background but not so much they're centered in the shot and it does look, to my eye, better. Thank you

I agree the background needs to be more of a focal point, although I do like the way the tall grassy area kind of snakes it's way right to the boat area, kind of like leading your eye to the main subject. If you can get the background as vibrant as the foreground I would think this an excellent capture. but obviously that is my opinion, and I am like most of you, still learning. Good shot!!

No, I like that 'snaking' in the foreground, and I agree that it leads the eye to the middle of the picture. Having the background like that helps me feel the cold air of the scene.

Technically, the exposure and coloring is good. It tells of a cool, overcast day and the fog is lifting. I am afraid it says too much in composition. The orange grass snaking out is a nice touch but it makes my eyes compete with the boat and dock. Each would be strong subjects alone, but together make the photo weak.

an nice shot but lacks a little something - the snaking grass does lead the eye into the shot and i would clone out the post to the right of the picture or crop in a bit tighter. May be a bit of a boost in the colours would help the overall scene
