Default Sun through the trees...

I am a beginning photographer. I shot this with a nikon L100. It's a point and shoot, but it's a little on the higher end... The subject is placed pretty much dead center, which isn't usually the best idea, but I thought it was kind of powerful and I wanted to capture the surroundings on both sides... I would like some advice on the composition. thanks..

This is a very difficult shot to meter. The sun is a bit bright with the remaining picture being a bit under-exposed.
However, the main drawback I see is the scene is very busy with lots of distractions that don't seem to add to a certain subject.
I like the idea but perhaps simplify the composition..
